Seated Thoracic Extension

The Seated Thoracic Extension is performed in an upright position with your feet flat on the floor and your hands placed behind your head for support. From here, gently lift your chest and extend through the mid-back while keeping the movement controlled.

You may notice that this exercise feels more challenging than other thoracic mobility drills, as it requires better control and awareness of the mid-spine. It also challenges you to avoid compensating through the lower back or neck.

As you perform the movement, focus on smooth, pain-free motion through the thoracic spine. The goal is not to force a large range, but to improve the quality of movement and gradually restore extension in the mid-back.

This exercise can be especially helpful for individuals who spend long hours sitting or working at a desk, those experiencing stiffness or tightness in the upper and mid-back, and anyone looking to improve posture and spinal mobility. It can also benefit athletes who need better thoracic extension for overhead movements, as well as individuals recovering from upper back or shoulder issues under proper guidance.
